Finding the Right Doula for You: Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Doula
Choosing a doula is one of the most personal decisions you can make during pregnancy.
Your doula will support you through one of the most transformative experiences of your life. They'll be there during moments of excitement, vulnerability, uncertainty, and strength. That's why finding the right fit matters just as much as finding a qualified doula.
Many expectant parents begin their search by asking:
"How do I know if a doula is right for me?"
The answer isn't simply about training, experience, or certifications. It's about connection, trust, and finding someone whose approach aligns with your values and birth preferences.
What Does a Doula Do?
A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, birth, and often the postpartum period.
Unlike a midwife or doctor, a doula does not provide medical care. Instead, they help you:
Understand your options.
Prepare for birth.
Navigate decision-making.
Support your birth partner.
Feel emotionally supported throughout labour.
Access comfort measures and coping techniques.
Every doula brings their own personality, experience, and philosophy to their work, which is why interviewing potential doulas is so important.
Why the Relationship Matters
Research consistently shows that continuous support during labour can improve birth experiences. However, support is most effective when you genuinely trust the person providing it.
Ask yourself:
Do I feel comfortable talking openly with this person?
Do I feel listened to?
Do I feel respected?
Can I imagine having this person in my birth space?
Your doula may be one of the few people present during some of the most intimate moments of your life. Trusting your instincts is important.
There Is No Perfect Doula
Many parents spend hours comparing websites, certifications, and social media profiles looking for the "best" doula.
The truth is that the best doula is often the one who makes you feel safe, understood, and supported.
A doula who is perfect for one family may not be the right fit for another.
Rather than asking who is the best doula, ask:
"Who feels like the best fit for me?"
Questions to Ask During a Doula Interview
Here are some helpful questions to ask when meeting with potential doulas.
1. What Training and Experience Do You Have?
Understanding a doula's background can help you learn more about their experience and approach.
You might ask:
How long have you been supporting births?
What training have you completed?
How many births have you attended?
Do you have experience supporting births similar to mine?
2. What Is Your Philosophy Around Birth?
Every doula brings their own perspective to birth.
Ask:
How would you describe your approach to supporting families?
What does a positive birth experience mean to you?
How do you support different birth choices?
Listen for answers that align with your own values.
3. How Do You Support Birth Partners?
A common concern is whether a doula will replace the birth partner.
The answer should always be no.
Ask:
How do you work alongside partners?
How do you help partners feel involved during labour?
The right doula will support both of you as a team.
4. What Support Do You Offer During Pregnancy?
Doula support varies considerably.
You may want to ask:
How many antenatal sessions are included?
What topics do we cover?
Can I contact you between appointments?
5. What Happens When Labour Starts?
Understanding logistics can help you feel more prepared.
Ask:
When should we contact you?
How long will you stay during labour?
What happens if labour is very long?
6. Do You Have a Backup Doula?
Even doulas can become unwell or experience emergencies.
Ask:
Do you work with a backup doula?
Can we meet them before the birth?
7. Have You Supported Families With Similar Experiences?
If you've experienced birth trauma, pregnancy loss, infertility, or are planning a home birth, VBAC, or caesarean birth, it can be helpful to ask about relevant experience.
For example:
Have you supported families after traumatic births?
Do you have experience supporting home births?
Have you supported VBAC families?
8. What Is Included in Your Fee?
It's important to understand exactly what support is included.
Ask:
What does your package include?
Are there any additional costs?
Is postnatal support included?
Questions to Ask Yourself After the Interview
Sometimes the most important questions aren't the ones you ask the doula.
They're the ones you ask yourself afterwards.
Take a moment to reflect:
Did I feel comfortable with them?
Did they listen more than they talked?
Did I feel judged or supported?
Did they respect my choices?
Did I leave the conversation feeling calmer or more anxious?
Could I imagine them supporting me during labour?
Your body often knows the answer before your mind catches up.
Trust Your Instincts
When choosing a doula, qualifications and experience matter. But connection matters too.
The right doula won't tell you what to do or pressure you towards a particular type of birth.
Instead, they'll help you feel informed, supported, and confident in your own decisions.
Birth is deeply personal, and the support you choose should feel personal too.
